The ATM is asking for a 5 or 6 digits PIN, what do I do?

Some foreign ATMs require a 6 digit PIN. Don't worry, if the ATM is asking for a 6 digit PIN, your 4 digit PIN will work just fine!

You can insert your 4 digit PIN as it is first. In case the ATM doesn't allow you to proceed with only 4 digits, enter your 4 digit PIN followed by 00 and the system should accept it.

The first 4 digits are the most important, these are what the ATM uses to recognize that the Some foreign ATMs require a 6-digit PIN. Don't worry, if the ATM is asking for a 6-digit PIN, your 4-digit PIN will work just fine!

You should first use your 4-digit PIN as you normally do. In case the ATM doesn't allow you to proceed with only 4 digits, enter your 4-digit PIN followed by 00 and the system should accept it. 

The first 4 digits are the most important, these are what the ATM uses to recognize that the correct PIN has been entered.

The ATM says "PIN tries exceeded"

You should first confirm you are using the correct PIN. You can retrieve your PIN in App:

  • Tap the Card tab

  • Select Show PIN

  • A 6-digit code will be sent to your phone, and you will need to enter this in App for security reasons

  • Once entered, your PIN will be shown

You can always reset your PIN tries and unblock your PIN in App by clicking on Unblock PIN in the Card tab.

Why was my transaction declined?

Typical reasons for declined transactions are: 

  • The wrong PIN has been entered - you can always reset your PIN tries and unblock your PIN in App by clicking on Unblock PIN in the Card tab. Then attempt the payment again with the correct PIN

  • Your first transaction in contactless: you need to perform a CHIP & PIN transaction first before you are able to use contactless payments

  • You’ve reached the limit for contactless transactions 

  • The transaction value is higher than the balance on the card 

  • Your card is blocked - check the status of your card in the card tab

  • You have exceeded the spending limits of the card

What are the limits for contactless payments?

Contactless payment limits vary by country. However, these have been set at £100 or the equivalent in another currency by Blackthorn Finance. If you want to make a transaction over £100, you will need to perform the transaction using your CHIP and PIN at the terminal.

Please be aware that the contactless transaction limit of £100 may vary depending on the local and merchant's limits (this may be more or less than £100).

You can only conduct a maximum of 5 consecutive contactless transactions. When you reach this limit, you will then need to use CHIP and PIN to reset the counter.

These limits have been set to help prevent against fraud by the FCA and is in line with the Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2). You can find more information by visiting: https://www.fca.org.uk/publication/policy/ps21-2.pdf

What if I didn't receive my card?

We currently only deliver the Blackthorn card to UK residents only.

Once you order the card from the App, it is sent by 1st Class Royal Mail delivery, and it should arrive within 3-5 working days.

Your card will be in a plain windowed envelope with no Blackthorn branding – this is for security reasons.

If it has been more than 7-10 days and you still have not received your card, please contact our Support Team via our Intercom Live Chat from the App or email help@blackthorn.finance. You will need to confirm your postal address.

We can only send a new card to your registered address for security purposes.

What happens if my card is lost or stolen?

If you have only misplaced your card, you can temporarily block it on the App to prevent any new charges being made on your card:

  • Tap the Card tab

  • Click on Block below the picture of the card

  • A pop up will ask you to confirm this action – click Block to proceed

This action is reversible, and you can unblock your card at any time. Once you unblock your card, you should be able to use it as normal.

If your card has been lost or stolen, you must cancel it on the App to prevent any fraudulent use:

  • Tap the Card tab

  • Click on Cancel Card

  • A pop up will ask you to confirm this action – click Cancel to proceed

This action is irreversible, and your card will be cancelled. At this point you will need to request a new card.

How do I activate my Blackthorn card?

You can activate your card via the Blackthorn App:

  • Tap the Card tab

  • Click Activate Card

  • Enter the last 4 digits of the card number

A screen will confirm that the card is successfully activated, and your PIN will be shown below.

How long will my card take to arrive?

Once you order the card from the App, it is sent by 1st Class Royal Mail delivery, and it should arrive within 3-5 working days.

Your card will be in a plain windowed envelope with no Blackthorn branding – this is for security reasons.

To order a Blackthorn card, you will need to have a verified Blackthorn Individual Account. The card can only be requested by UK residents (fees may apply, please check our Fees - Personal section).

How do I unblock my PIN?

You should first confirm that you are using the correct PIN. You can retrieve your PIN in App:

  • Tap the Card tab

  • Select Show PIN

  • A 6-digit code will be sent to your phone, and you will need to enter this in App for security reasons

  • Once entered, your PIN will be shown

You can always reset your PIN tries and unblock your PIN in App by clicking on Unblock PIN in the Card tab.

How do I retrieve my PIN?

You can retrieve your card PIN in App:

  • Tap the Card tab

  • Select Show PIN

  • A 6-digit code will be sent to your phone, and you will need to enter this in App for security reasons

  • Once entered, your PIN will be shown
